After the 3-0 opening-day win over Holstein Kiel we listened in to what Timo Schultz and his players had to say about the match.
Head coach Timo Schultz: "I'm obviously pleased with the performance. We did really well from the outset and were especially resolute in our pressing of the ball. We showed great discipline in our movement against the two Kiel number eights. All things considered, it was a deserved win in the end, we created a number of chances. We squandered another couple and others were ruled out for offside. But it looked good, I have to say."
Jakov Medić: "That was unbelievable. The first game at home, we won – what more can I say? It's incredible with the fans. We knew what we had to do from the outset. Everyone was fully focused."
Rico Benatelli: "It was a great start to the season for us today. We got three points, put in a convincing performance, scored some nice goals and the fans are back at last. We want success, we want to win every game, and today we can tick the first one off."
Philipp Ziereis: "We put a lot of emphasis on our defensive movement in pre-season, and it worked very well today. For some of the players it was their first taste of the Millerntor atmosphere. I'm delighted for the lads and all the fans who were there. We all wanted it so badly and we got our reward today."
Fin Bartels (Holstein Kiel): "It didn't go at all the way we planned. We have to keep working and not let it get to us. It was clear we wouldn't glide through the season like we did last year. We have to work, work, work – and then we'll get to where we want to be."
Ole Werner (Holstein Kiel head coach): "Congratulations to St. Pauli on starting the new season with a deserved win. Not much came off for us today, we lacked compactness and aggression, especially in our work against the ball. We were also second-best in our speed of execution in every key situation. There was only one phase where something might have happened for us, and that was at the beginning of the second half. In the end, though, it was a one-sided affair."
