Bornemann pens new deal

FC St. Pauli and director of sport Andreas Bornemann have agreed terms on a contract extension that will see Bornemann retain responsibility for professional football at the club beyond 2024. Club president Oke Göttlich said it was a significant decision in terms of the club's on-pitch future.

Bornemann, 51, was appointed director of sport in 2019, having previously held equivalent positions at FC Nürnberg, Holstein Kiel, Alemannia Aachen and SC Freiburg. He spent his playing career at SC Freiburg.

Göttlich emphasised the importance of the staffing decision, saying: "In the last four years, we have experienced Andreas Bornemann as an accomplished professional who carries out his work loyally in the interests of the club and is not afraid to make difficult decisions." He then pointed to the huge progress made in the area of professional football at the club: "Andreas has developed a more professional infrastructure. We have the best pitch in the league, an outstanding backroom team, an ambitious coach and, above all, we have a squad built for the long term. We have the efforts and tireless commitment of Andreas to thank for that. He’s increased the substance and the quality of the squad and generated transfer revenue at the same time.”

Bornemann expressed his gratitude for the collaboration thus far, especially with the club boards, saying it had been characterised by trust even when times were tough. "I'm convinced FC St. Pauli offers an excellent environment for ongoing success on the pitch. We aim to improve step by step across the broad and there's a strong foundation from which we can carry on building. I look forward to continuing our association and developing the area of professional football at the Millerntor.”
